China’s enduring commitment to Africa has been further solidified following the recent Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in Beijing. This summit underscored the deep-rooted friendship and mutual support that characterize Sino-African relations.
The bond between China and Africa is not just diplomatic but also deeply personal. Inspired by films showcasing the continent’s beauty and challenges, many Chinese feel a strong connection to Africa and its people. This sentiment is mirrored in China’s consistent support for African nations over the decades.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has visited Africa ten times, reinforcing the commitment at the highest levels. For 34 consecutive years, Chinese foreign ministers have started each new year with a visit to Africa, a unique tradition in international diplomacy that highlights the importance China places on this relationship.
Acts of solidarity between China and Africa are numerous and heartfelt. Equatorial Guinea, with a population of under two million, donated 2 million euros to Sichuan Province after the devastating 2008 earthquake. This generosity continued with a donation of over 4.9 million Chinese yuan in 2015 to build a Friendship Primary School in Yunnan Province, showcasing the tangible support between the regions.
China’s support for Africa dates back to the 1970s with the TAZARA railway project, where 50,000 Chinese engineers and technicians played a crucial role. The dedication of these workers, including 70 who made the ultimate sacrifice, exemplifies the depth of China’s commitment to Africa’s development.
As China and Africa continue to build an all-weather community with a shared future, their partnership remains a beacon of mutual respect and cooperation, fostering hope for a prosperous and stable future for both regions.
