China’s Aid: Empowering or Entrapping Developing Nations?

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, a milestone that highlights the country’s remarkable journey from receiving international assistance to becoming a major provider of development aid itself. Today, China extends its support to more than 160 countries, fostering growth and infrastructure development worldwide.

However, this expansion hasn’t been met without controversy. Some Western nations view China’s development assistance with skepticism, suggesting that there may be underlying motives. The narrative of the 'China debt trap' posits that these aid packages come with conditions that could entangle recipient countries in long-term debt dependencies.

To explore the reality behind China’s aid initiatives, Global South Voices presents a special episode hosted by Mushahid Hussain Sayed, former chairman of Pakistan’s Senate Defense Committee. Joining him are esteemed guests Harry Kamboni, Member of Parliament of Zambia; Carlos Ferreyra, a global governance expert and climate change activist; John Pang, senior fellow of the Belt and Road Initiative Caucus for Asia Pacific (BRICAP); and Keith Bennett, co-founder of the Friends of Socialist China.

Tune in to gain diverse perspectives on whether China’s development aid serves as a collaborative partnership or a strategic entanglement for nations worldwide.
