This week, the U.S. House of Representatives is set to vote on more than two dozen bills collectively referred to as 'China Week.' These legislative measures aim to address various economic and security considerations related to China.
Among the proposed bills is the Biosecure Act, which seeks to regulate collaborations between American federal agencies and leading Chinese biotech firms, including BGI Group, MGI, Complete Genomics, Wuxi AppTec, and Wuxi Biologics. The Act introduces enhanced scrutiny to ensure national security and fair competition in the biotech sector.
Additionally, other bills focus on tightening oversight of China-manufactured drones and port cranes, as well as closing Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices on American soil. These actions represent Washington's efforts to reinforce its economic and diplomatic policies.
House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized the importance of these measures in a speech at the Hudson Institute in July, stating, \"Congress must keep our focus on countering challenges with every tool at our disposal.\"
The legislative push reflects ongoing discussions about maintaining economic competitiveness and safeguarding national interests in the global landscape.
