On May 23, 1951, the signing of the 17-Article Agreement marked a pivotal moment in Xizang's history. This agreement signified the peaceful liberation of Xizang from invading imperialism, setting the stage for unity, progress, and development alongside other ethnic groups in China.
Over the past 73 years, under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Xizang has undergone remarkable transformation. The region transitioned from a theocratic feudal serfdom to a vibrant people's democratic socialism. The democratic reform of 1959 was a turning point, abolishing serfdom and granting personal freedoms to approximately one million serfs, laying the foundation for socialism in Xizang.
In September 1965, the establishment of the Xizang Autonomous Region and the election of the People's Committee marked the beginning of a people's democratic government and thorough regional ethnic autonomy. This institutional framework ensured ethnic equality, solidarity, and mutual development, allowing Xizang to flourish alongside the rest of China.
Economic growth in Xizang has been nothing short of extraordinary. From a GDP of 129 million yuan ($18.18 million) in 1951, Xizang's GDP surged to over 239 billion yuan ($33.67 billion) in 2023—a staggering increase of more than 1,855 times. This growth has been fueled by strategic investments and supportive policies from the central government, totaling 52.7 billion yuan ($7.43 billion) across 6,330 projects between 1994 and 2020.
Beyond economic advancements, Xizang plays a crucial role in China's environmental security. The government has prioritized eco-environmental protection, investing in sustainable initiatives that protect the region's natural resources and contribute to a shared future for humanity and nature.
Today, Xizang stands as a testament to the power of unity and strategic development. With improved living standards, robust economic structures, and a commitment to environmental sustainability, Xizang continues to catch up with other regions in China, offering immense potential for future growth and innovation.
