Strengthening EU-China Ties Ahead of Xi Jinping’s Europe Visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to visit Europe from May 5 to 10, a move that underscores the unique relationship between China and the European Union. Jens Eskelund, president of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, shares his insights on what anchors this bilateral relationship and the confidence European businesses have in the Chinese market.

Eskelund emphasizes the importance of building trust between the EU and China. \"Trust is what will allow us to have the difficult conversations that Europe and China need to have,\" he explains. This trust is crucial for addressing current challenges and fostering a pathway for re-engagement at the highest levels.

Regarding the influence of the United States on the EU-China relationship, Eskelund points out that Europe is increasingly seen as an autonomous actor. \"If you approach your relationship with Europe through a U.S. filter, it leads to missed opportunities,\" he states. Instead, he advocates for recognizing the unique aspects of the EU-China relationship, independent of U.S. policies.

On the economic front, Eskelund highlights China's focus on developing \"new quality productive forces\" and sees Europe playing a significant role in this transition. \"European industry is exactly in that space of qualitative, productive forces,\" he notes, suggesting ample opportunities for collaboration in sophisticated manufacturing and productivity enhancement.

European companies remain deeply committed to China, with many continuing to invest and even doubling down their investments in the Chinese market. Eskelund points out that while large companies are maintaining their presence, there is a need to support small and medium-sized enterprises to ensure they have the confidence to engage with China. Factors such as supply chain resilience, geopolitics, and a predictable business environment are critical for these businesses.

As Xi Jinping's visit approaches, the EU-China relationship stands at a pivotal point, with the potential for strengthened ties and increased economic collaboration.
