Suriname Celebrates 170 Years of Chinese Heritage, Strengthens Ties with Chinese Mainland

Suriname, a picturesque nation on the northern coast of South America, is celebrating a significant milestone this year. In 2023, the country marked the 170th anniversary of Chinese settlement, home to the largest concentration of overseas Chinese in the Caribbean. This year also sees Suriname become the first nation in the Western Hemisphere to recognize the Chinese Spring Festival as an official national holiday, highlighting the deep-rooted cultural ties between the two communities.

Beyond cultural celebrations, Suriname is forging stronger economic and strategic partnerships with the Chinese mainland. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the strategic cooperative partnership between the two nations. During his state visit to the Chinese mainland from April 11 to 17, President Chandrikapersad Santokhi emphasized Suriname's commitment to enhancing economic and trade cooperation. In an exclusive interview with CMG's Wang Guan, President Santokhi praised the global initiatives proposed by Chinese Premier Xi Jinping, stating, \"Whether you like it or not, [the Chinese mainland] will be called upon to take responsibility as a new leader of emerging countries.\"

This partnership aims to leverage China's prominent role in global affairs to foster economic growth and sustainable development in Suriname. By strengthening these bilateral relations, Suriname seeks to benefit from China's expertise in various sectors, including technology, infrastructure, and trade, positioning itself as a key player in the region's economic landscape.

As Suriname continues to celebrate its rich Chinese heritage and deepen its ties with the Chinese mainland, the nation stands as a testament to the enduring power of cultural and economic collaboration in shaping a prosperous and interconnected world.
