China-U.S. Relations: Embracing a Whole Society Approach for Stability

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is currently visiting the Chinese mainland from April 24 to 26, marking his second trip since taking office. This visit comes at a crucial time as China and the U.S. navigate their complex relationship.

The China-U.S. relationship has been in a turbulent phase since former President Trump ignited a trade and tariff war, positioning China as the primary rival. The pandemic further strained ties, leading to reduced communication and personal exchanges between the two nations.

At a thematic luncheon event co-hosted by the Center for China and Globalization (CCG) and the Bled Strategic Forum (BSF), CCG President Wang Huiyao shared his perspective on the current state of Sino-American relations. He classified the relationship as being in a stabilizing stage, emphasizing the necessity of dialogue given that the two are the world’s largest economies with shared global challenges.

Wang highlighted the importance of comprehensive communication at various levels, suggesting that not only top leaders but also Congress members and local officials should engage to foster deeper understanding and minimize negative sentiments. A focus on a whole society approach is essential to mitigate populism and nationalism that often exacerbate tensions.

The international business community, including CEOs and entrepreneurs, are keen on maintaining robust China-U.S. relations, recognizing China’s vast market potential. However, political sensitivities make it challenging to openly advocate for expanded business in the Chinese mainland. Wang emphasized the need for a societal approach to support a stable business environment.

As Secretary Blinken's visit continues, the hope is that enhanced communication and a concerted societal effort can pave the way for a more stable and cooperative China-U.S. relationship, addressing geopolitical issues from the Middle East to the South China Sea, and fostering mutual economic growth.
