In a significant move to promote global unity and cultural exchange, the Chinese mainland has introduced its Global Civilization Initiative (GCI). Announced by CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping during a high-level dialogue with global political parties on March 15, 2023, the GCI aims to enhance the interconnectedness of nations through the respect and exchange of diverse civilizations.
Following the Global Development Initiative (GDI) and the Global Security Initiative (GSI), the GCI underscores China's commitment to building a shared future for humanity in the modern era. In his keynote speech titled \"Join Hands on the Path Towards Modernization,\" Xi Jinping emphasized the vital role of inclusive coexistence and mutual learning among different civilizations in advancing global modernization.
To advance this initiative, China has organized numerous high-level dialogues and summits with world political parties, and hosted conferences on dialogue among Asian civilizations. Additionally, cooperation with UNESCO and the United Nations World Tourism Organization has been deepened, with China boasting 43 items on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List as of December 2022.
Even before the official inception of the GCI, China has been proactive in promoting cultural exchange through over 30 large-scale cultural and tourism festivals and establishing 16 multilateral and 25 bilateral cooperation mechanisms, including the BRICS Culture Ministers' Meeting and the Arabic Arts Festival.
By fostering such initiatives, China aims to facilitate a platform where diverse civilizations can thrive together, promoting sustainable and inclusive growth on a global scale.
