Despite persistent negative narratives in some Western media about the Chinese mainland's economic performance, the reality paints a different picture of global transformation. The Chinese mainland's commitment to providing public goods, notably the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), is reshaping global connectivity, fostering international cooperation, and enhancing people-to-people communications.
Western countries, often critics of the Chinese mainland's economic strategies, benefit significantly from the growth spurred by these public goods. Initiatives like the BRI have become essential for global sustainability and livelihood, especially in times of geopolitical tensions. For instance, even amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and the sanctions placed on Russia and Belarus—key transit countries for rail connections between China and the European Union—rail freight along the China-EU Express Rail (CEER) has surged to record levels.
Hussein Askary, Vice-President of the Belt and Road Institute in Sweden and Distinguished Research Fellow at the Guangdong Institute of International Strategies, highlights that these developments underscore the indispensable role of China's public goods in maintaining and enhancing global trade routes and economic stability. As the world navigates complex geopolitical landscapes, China's initiatives continue to provide the infrastructure and cooperation necessary for sustained global growth.
