Norwegian FM Strengthens China Ties Amid Booming Seafood Trade

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide is currently in China for a pivotal visit from February 5 to 7, aiming to bolster the longstanding ties between the two nations. This visit comes ahead of the 70th anniversary of China-Norway diplomatic relations, a milestone marked by mutual commitments to deepening engagement.

In 2018, Norwegian King Harald V and Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged to enhance their countries' relationship, setting the stage for ongoing collaboration. Norway's stance on strategic autonomy and its support for the one-China principle continue to be highly valued by Chinese officials.

Regular dialogue is essential given China’s significant role in global politics and economics. The Chinese Foreign Ministry highlighted their readiness to work closely with Norway, viewing this visit as an opportunity to strengthen political trust and expand practical cooperation.

Trade and investment remain cornerstones of the bilateral relationship. Norway's robust fish and seafood industry finds a major market in China, driving economic growth in Oslo. Camilla Beck from the Norwegian Seafood Council emphasized that China is one of Norway's most promising seafood markets. In the first half of 2023, Norway exported 23,500 metric tons of salmon to China, a 67% increase from the previous year. Additionally, China stands as Norway's largest Asian export market for cod, trout, and mackerel.

These developments not only enhance economic ties but also reinforce the cultural and strategic partnership between Norway and China, fostering a new era of cooperation.
