In a significant move towards enhancing regional cooperation, President Mohamed Muizzu of the Republic of Maldives is embarking on a state visit to China from January 8 to 12. Invited by President Xi Jinping, Muizzu becomes the first foreign head of state to visit China by invitation in 2024. This marks his first international state visit since assuming office last November.
The visit underscores the mutual importance both nations place on their relationship. Analysts anticipate that the leaders will reach substantial agreements and sign a series of bilateral cooperation agreements spanning politics, trade, investment, infrastructure development, education, tourism, culture, and the green economy.
Since establishing diplomatic relations on October 14, 1972, China and the Maldives have cultivated a steadily growing friendship. President Xi's state visit to the Maldives in September 2014 laid the groundwork for a "future-oriented, all-round friendly and cooperative partnership."
Strategically positioned in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives serves as a crucial partner in China's neighborhood diplomacy, acting as a key shipping hub linking Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East.
The economic bond between the two nations is strengthening, with bilateral trade reaching $451 million in 2022, marking a 10.1% increase year-on-year. Chinese investments in the Maldives have surged, particularly in sectors such as tourism, fisheries, transportation, and energy.
Under China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the Maldives has seen significant infrastructure advancements. Notable projects include the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, the Hulhumale affordable housing project, and the expansion of the Male international airport. These developments not only boost the Maldives' socio-economic landscape but also enhance the quality of life for its residents.
The Maldives, renowned for its pristine beaches and vibrant marine life, relies heavily on tourism. The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted this sector, prompting Maldivian authorities to actively seek to attract Chinese tourists back to the islands. Efforts are underway to showcase the Maldives' natural beauty and cultural richness, aiming to rejuvenate the tourism industry and support related service sectors.
