Reviving Nature: Chu Wenwen’s Mission to Protect China’s Rare Beavers

In the heart of the Altay Prefecture in northwest China, Chu Wenwen is making waves in wildlife conservation. As the founder of the Altay Nature Conservation Association, Chu has dedicated her life to protecting the region's rich biodiversity.

Growing up surrounded by wild animals, Chu developed a deep respect for nature. This passion led her to establish the wildlife rescue center in 2021, where her team has successfully rehabilitated and released 291 animals over five years.

One of her notable rescues is Neng Neng, a brown bear cub saved from the brink of death. Through dedicated care and a strategic rewilding plan, Chu and her team restored Neng Neng's health, allowing her to return to the wild and thrive independently.

However, not all rescue stories have happy endings. Chu recounts the heartbreaking loss of a demoiselle crane due to pesticide poisoning, highlighting the relentless challenges of conservation work.

Beyond individual rescues, Chu emphasizes the importance of habitat restoration. Her efforts to revive the Sino-Mongolian beaver population have been particularly impactful. By building a Beaver Cafeteria and planting 750,000 saplings, Chu's team has increased the beaver population by 20%, marking the highest numbers recorded in China.

Community involvement has been crucial to this success. With 500 volunteer rangers and enthusiastic young supporters, the conservation movement in Altay has grown into a collective effort. Social media initiatives have also played a significant role, bringing global attention to the region's wildlife and inspiring others to contribute.

Chu Wenwen's work exemplifies the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature. Her dedication has sparked an ecological awakening among China's Gen Z, fostering a generation committed to preserving the planet's diverse life forms.

As Chu aptly puts it, \"We share one Earth as our common home. Together, we form this world's biosphere, and it's our responsibility to maintain harmony among all life forms.\" Her vision and actions not only protect wildlife but also ensure a sustainable future for all.
