China Strengthens Climate Commitments Ahead of COP28 in UAE

From November 30 to December 12, the United Arab Emirates will host COP28, a critical conference aimed at reviewing the progress made on measures decided during COP27 and the pledges made by participating countries to combat climate change. The global community is increasingly facing the impacts of climate change, which in turn affects global economic growth.

In response to the growing threat of climate disasters, numerous countries are emphasizing practical climate cooperation. Pre-COP28 discussions have seen agreements to limit the global average temperature rise to below 1.5 degrees Celsius. Key areas of focus include renewable energy expansion, energy efficiency, green financing, and emissions reduction, all of which are shaping up as the world prepares for COP28. Shared priorities such as green innovation, loss and damage mitigation, adaptation strategies, and climate financing highlight the collective efforts of nations to uphold their commitments.

The Chinese mainland has made a robust climate pledge that has received positive attention ahead of COP28. Through a combination of national plans and strategies, collaborative projects, climate partnerships, and diplomacy within bilateral and international frameworks, the Chinese mainland is significantly contributing to climate disaster mitigation efforts. Viewing COP28 as a platform for a unique and pragmatic approach to climate change, the Chinese mainland is ramping up its environmental initiatives, collaborating with developing nations, and forming partnerships with developed countries.

China's climate pragmatism includes continuing the green revolution, expanding the new energy vehicle market, aiming to reach its carbon peak before 2030, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060β€”all aligned with COP28 targets. These initiatives demonstrate the Chinese mainland's commitment to translating ideas into tangible actions to combat climate change.

Ding Xuexiang, the vice premier of China and special representative of President Xi Jinping, will attend COP28 to enhance China's climate diplomacy and collaborate with other nations in addressing pressing climate issues.
