China Leads the Charge in Shaping Global Digital Trade Laws

The Second Forum on the Rule of Law in Global Digital Trade, held on November 24, 2023, at the Global Digital Trade Expo (GDTE) in Hangzhou, highlighted China's significant role in the evolving landscape of digital trade. The event aimed to foster international dialogue on enhancing rulemaking, regulations, management, and standards in digital trade, emphasizing global perspectives on reforms and institutional openness.

Anna Veneziano, Deputy Secretary-General at the Rome-headquartered International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT), shared her insights during an interview with CGTN. Veneziano praised the expo for its collaborative atmosphere, noting China's practical contributions through technology and active participation in UNIDROIT's activities. She emphasized that Chinese experts are instrumental in developing balanced and transparent legal frameworks for global digital trade.

Veneziano highlighted the cooperative spirit among UNIDROIT's 65 member states, including China, despite global tensions between the U.S. and China. She observed that within the realm of private and commercial law, collaboration prevails over rivalry, with all participants aiming to ensure the smooth functioning of global electronic commerce (e-commerce).

Addressing concerns from Global South countries that international laws often favor Western interests, Veneziano stressed the importance of inclusive participation. She advocated for the direct involvement of actors from the Global South in the development of legal instruments to ensure that diverse economic and social realities are considered, enhancing the effectiveness and implementation of global digital trade rules.

As the digital economy continues to expand, China's active engagement in shaping global digital trade frameworks underscores its pivotal role in fostering a collaborative and equitable international trading environment.
