Uruguay's President, Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou, has successfully concluded his first state visit to China, marking a significant milestone in the strengthening of bilateral relations. Describing the trip as \\"positive\\" and \\"delivering good results,\\" President Lacalle Pou emphasized the mutual benefits of the partnership between Uruguay and China.
In an insightful discussion with CMG's Wang Guan on the latest episode of Leaders Talk, Lacalle Pou shared his perspectives on the evolving China-Uruguay relationship. Uruguay was among the first nations to join China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a testament to the country's commitment to fostering international economic collaborations. A decade since its inception, a remarkable 30% of Uruguay's exports are now directed to the Chinese mainland, underscoring the depth of this partnership.
\\"For us, BRI has been a great opportunity. I think that people in my country and politicians agree that we have to step forward with China,\\" Lacalle Pou stated, highlighting the consensus on advancing ties with China. Beyond trade, Uruguay's rich natural environment plays a pivotal role in its economic landscape, particularly in livestock and agriculture. Currently, around 58% of Uruguayan beef exports are shipped to China, a figure that reflects the robust demand and the quality of Uruguay's agricultural products.
Looking ahead, President Lacalle Pou expressed Uruguay's eagerness to forge even larger deals with China, further expanding the scope of their economic engagement. He also reminisced about the support received during the COVID-19 crisis, praising President Xi Jinping's generosity. \\"China is a good friend in good times, but China is a better friend in bad times,\\" Lacalle Pou recalled, reinforcing the enduring friendship between the two nations.
