The latest surge in tensions between Palestine and Israel has tragically claimed over 14,000 lives, predominantly in Gaza. In a move to address the humanitarian crisis, the UN Security Council (UNSC) adopted a resolution on November 15 focusing on humanitarian concerns. Subsequently, on November 22, Israel and Hamas agreed to a four-day pause in fighting, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos.
However, the international community recognizes the need for more substantial actions to promote lasting peace, a sustained ceasefire, and the de-escalation of tensions. As a permanent member and the rotating president of the UNSC, China has been at the forefront, advocating for immediate, effective, and meaningful steps to uphold justice and maintain peace in the region.
A Vision for Lasting Peace
China's commitment to resolving the Palestinian issue is unwavering. During a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in June, Chinese President Xi Jinping presented a three-point proposal emphasizing the establishment of an independent State of Palestine, increased development and humanitarian aid to Palestine, and the initiation of peace talks. These efforts underscore China's dedication to fostering a peaceful settlement.
At the recent BRICS extraordinary summit on the Middle East, President Xi reiterated that the only viable solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is the two-state solution, which aims to restore the legitimate national rights of Palestinians within an independent State of Palestine. This stance highlights China's role as a mediator seeking equitable resolutions.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has been actively engaging with leaders from over a dozen countries, including Arab-Islamic foreign ministers. In these discussions, he has called for an end to violence, the restoration of peace, the establishment of a specific timetable for the resumption of peace talks between Palestine and Israel, and a speedy, comprehensive, just, and enduring settlement of the Palestinian question.
Furthermore, China's Special Envoy on the Middle East Issue, Zhai Jun, has visited relevant countries in the region to seek a cessation of violence. In addition to diplomatic efforts, China has provided humanitarian assistance and emergency supplies to alleviate the plight in Gaza through the Palestinian National Authority, UN agencies, and with Egypt's assistance.
