Xi-Biden Summit: Dialogue Paves Way for Balanced China-U.S. Relations

The recent summit between Xi Jinping, the leader of the Chinese mainland, and Joe Biden, the U.S. President, marked a significant step towards stabilizing one of the world's most critical bilateral relationships. Held near San Francisco during the APEC Summit, the two leaders engaged in over four hours of constructive dialogue aimed at balancing competition with cooperation.

According to Rorry Daniels, Managing Director of the Asia Society Policy Institute, the meeting yielded positive outcomes, particularly in addressing issues like fentanyl production and re-establishing military-to-military communication. Daniels emphasized the importance of dialogue in preventing misunderstandings from escalating into conflicts, highlighting the responsible management of this pivotal relationship.

Both leaders conveyed a mutual desire to demonstrate to the global community that China and the U.S. can collaborate effectively. President Xi remarked that the world is large enough for both nations to thrive, while President Biden stressed the need to ensure that competition does not escalate into conflict.

Daniels further pointed out that a stable China-U.S. relationship is crucial for tackling global challenges such as climate change, food and energy insecurity. By setting a stable foundation, both countries can better cooperate on these pressing issues, benefiting not only their own populations but also the rest of the world.

Looking ahead, Daniels remains optimistic that the positive momentum from the summit will continue through the upcoming U.S. presidential election year. She believes that maintaining open channels of communication is essential for sustaining this relationship, regardless of the election outcome.
