Xi and Biden Kick Off APEC with Talks Focused on Mutual Respect and Economic Ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his U.S. counterpart Joe Biden met on November 15 in Woodside, California, setting the stage for the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in San Francisco. The meeting, which served as a curtain-raiser to APEC, was marked by a serious tone from both sides, highlighting the critical nature of the discussions ahead.

The summit was the first of several meetings scheduled on the sidelines of the APEC forum, reflecting the weighty issues that characterize the China-U.S. bilateral relationship. Both leaders emphasized the need to address these challenges to alleviate global tensions exacerbated by their interactions.

Despite their differences, the leaders agreed to \"keep to their lanes,\" with Xi stressing the importance of \"respect\" as a foundation for normalizing relations. Xi stated, \"it's unrealistic for one side to remodel the other,\" underscoring the necessity of mutual respect in navigating their distinct paths.

Xi also remarked, \"China-U.S. relationship has never been smooth sailing over the past 50 years and more, and that it always faces problems of one kind or another. Yet it has kept moving forward amid twists and turns.\" He highlighted that while the destiny of both nations is intertwined, each country maintains its unique social, cultural, economic, and development paths.
