Beijing Xiangshan Forum: A Decade of BRI’s Impact on Sri Lanka and Navigating Global Security Challenges

This year marks the ten-year milestone of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a transformative project that has reshaped the economic landscape of many global south countries, including Sri Lanka. At the Beijing Xiangshan Forum, industry leaders and experts gathered to discuss the profound changes brought about by the BRI and the evolving dynamics of global security.

We had the opportunity to speak with Piyal De Silva, former commander of the Sri Lankan Navy, who shared his insights on the BRI's decade-long influence on Sri Lanka. \"The BRI has significantly boosted our infrastructure development, fostering economic growth and regional connectivity,\" De Silva remarked. He emphasized how projects under the BRI have created new opportunities for Sri Lanka, enhancing both its economic stature and strategic importance in the region.

Amidst ongoing global conflicts, such as the Ukraine crisis and the tensions between Israel and Palestine, the topic of global security has never been more pertinent. These conflicts highlight the complex and interconnected nature of today's geopolitical landscape. To delve deeper into these issues, we engaged with David Harland, executive director of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue in Switzerland.

Harland addressed the critical question: What do these conflicts tell us about the current state of global security? He noted that the persistence of such conflicts underscores the need for robust international dialogue and collaborative efforts to maintain peace and stability.

When asked about the available international platforms for resolving conflicts, Harland highlighted the importance of forums like the Beijing Xiangshan Forum itself. These platforms facilitate essential discussions and negotiations that can lead to meaningful resolutions.

Furthermore, the role of China’s Global Security Initiative in promoting peace and stability was a focal point of our conversation. Harland expressed optimism, stating, \"China’s commitment to its Global Security Initiative can provide a new dimension to international security cooperation, fostering a more secure and stable global environment.\"

As the world continues to navigate through complex security challenges, the insights shared at the Beijing Xiangshan Forum offer valuable perspectives on fostering collaboration and ensuring a peaceful future.
