China Gains Trust in Middle East as West Faces Credibility Challenges

Amid the ongoing severe Israeli-Palestinian conflict, China is stepping up its diplomatic efforts to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. As the rotating chair of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), China, in collaboration with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is advocating for a meaningful and actionable resolution to halt the hostilities and protect civilians.

Ebrahim Hashem, an Emirati Strategist and Asia Global Fellow at Hong Kong University's Asia Global Institute, highlighted in an interview with CGTN that Western powers, particularly the United States and the UK, have hindered attempts to secure a ceasefire. He emphasized that China's balanced approach is gaining goodwill in the region, especially after its role in brokering the rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Hashem pointed out that the West's actions, such as blocking UNSC resolutions and deploying naval assets to the Eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea, have led many to question their credibility as mediators in the conflict. In contrast, China and potentially Russia are being seen as more balanced and legitimate actors capable of facilitating peace.

China's proactive stance in working with Arab representatives at the UN and its broader contributions to economic, political, and diplomatic stability in the Middle East underscore its growing influence and the region's increasing trust in its leadership.
