10 Years of China’s Neighborhood Diplomacy: Building Peace and Prosperity

China is celebrating a decade of neighborhood diplomacy, a cornerstone of its foreign relations that emphasizes cooperation and mutual growth with its 20 neighboring nations. On October 24, Chinese President Xi Jinping, also the general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, reaffirmed China’s commitment to fostering an Asian homeland characterized by peace, tranquility, and prosperity.

In a message sent to an international symposium commemorating the 10th anniversary of neighborhood diplomacy, President Xi highlighted the principles of amity, sincerity, mutual benefit, and inclusiveness. These principles guide China’s efforts to build friendly coexistence and enhance regional stability.

Why is Neighborhood Diplomacy Important?

Since its elevation to a key pillar of China’s foreign policy in 2013, neighborhood diplomacy has played a crucial role in shaping the geopolitical landscape of the region. With 14 land neighbors and six maritime neighbors, China recognizes the complexity and strategic significance of its peripheral areas.

Promoting neighborhood diplomacy is essential for achieving Chinese modernization and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. By fostering a favorable surrounding environment, China aims to support its own reform and development while ensuring that neighboring countries also benefit, paving the way for common prosperity and development.

This bilateral and multilateral approach ensures that neighborhood diplomacy is not a one-way policy. The collaborative efforts contribute to the stability and prosperity of the entire region, reflecting China’s commitment to shared growth and harmonious relations.
