SCO Meeting in Bishkek Boosts Central Asia’s Global Influence

Chinese Premier Li Qiang has arrived in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to attend the 22nd Meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Member States from October 24 to 27. Established in 2001, the SCO now includes nine member countries: China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, Pakistan, and Iran.

Recent developments highlight the strengthening political and economic ties between China and Central Asia. On May 19, leaders from China and five Central Asian countries—Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan—gathered in Xi'an for the inaugural summit. They committed to principles of mutual assistance, joint development, universal security, and enduring friendship.

The summit marked a significant breakthrough, with parties agreeing to enhance mutual trust and support each other on sovereignty, independence, national dignity, and long-term development. This foundation is set to propel future cooperation to new heights.

Economic relations are flourishing, with mutual trade and investment seeing substantial growth. In 2022, China's trade with the five Central Asian countries surged by 40 percent year-on-year, reaching $70.2 billion, a figure expected to surpass in the current year despite global economic challenges.

During the SCO meeting in Bishkek, delegations will review the progress made since the 23rd Council of Heads of State meeting. Discussions will focus on strategies and practical measures to enhance cooperation in regional security, economics, trade, communications, and people-to-people exchanges, further solidifying Central Asia's role on the global stage.
