China’s Belt and Road Initiative Boosts Global Agriculture

In a world facing significant challenges like poverty and food insecurity, global cooperation is more crucial than ever. China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is stepping up to this call by fostering agricultural collaboration with over 90 countries and international organizations.

Since its inception in 2013, the BRI has initiated more than 650 agricultural investment projects worth $14 billion. These projects are not just about investment; they encompass the entire agri-food value chain, including inputs, production, processing, and delivery. By enhancing infrastructure such as efficient transport networks and upgrading facilities for storage and irrigation, BRI is laying the groundwork for sustainable agricultural growth.

A key component of this initiative is the transfer of agricultural knowledge and technology. Over the past decade, China has dispatched more than 2,000 agricultural technicians to 70 countries, training over 100,000 farmers in modern techniques like hybrid rice cultivation and smart farming. These efforts have indirectly benefited over a million individuals, addressing critical needs across the agricultural sector.

One standout success story is Burundi, a landlocked least developed country that joined the BRI in 2018. With its favorable climate and abundant rainfall, Burundi has seen remarkable advancements in its agriculture and livestock sectors, particularly in rice cultivation. These improvements have significantly enhanced food security, transforming Burundi into a more stable and prosperous nation.

The BRI’s agricultural cooperation is driving economic transformation by increasing productivity and promoting trade in the agriculture sector. This not only helps in lifting communities out of poverty but also opens new markets and creates jobs, especially in developing countries where agriculture plays a vital role in the economy.

As the BRI continues to expand its agricultural initiatives, it promises to unlock new growth opportunities and support sustainable development goals globally. By fostering collaboration and innovation, the Belt and Road Initiative is paving the way for a more food-secure and economically stable world.
