September marked a significant period for Chinese diplomacy, as the nation actively engaged with global leaders ahead of the 78th UN General Assembly (UNGA) held from September 18-26. China’s strategic participation in both bilateral and multilateral meetings underscored its commitment to fostering a multipolar world.
Head-of-state visits from Zambia and Cambodia highlighted strengthened cooperation between China and its African and Asian partners. Additionally, China played a pivotal role in the Summit of the Group of 77 and China and the 8th Eastern Economic Forum. These platforms provided the Global South countries with amplified voices in global development discussions.
High-level meetings with nations such as Venezuela, Russia, and Syria were particularly noteworthy. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s six-day visit from September 8 led to an upgrade of ties to an “all-weather” strategic partnership. Similarly, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s state visit resulted in the announcement of a China-Syria strategic partnership. These developments reflect China’s long-standing opposition to unilateral sanctions and its dedication to an inclusive world order.
At the UNGA, a clear divide emerged between countries advocating for a unipolar world and the majority pushing for a more democratic, multipolar arrangement. China’s diplomatic efforts, contrasted with the United States’ focus on its proxy war in Ukraine, emphasized the practical application of multilateralism over rhetoric. While the U.S. promoted its policies under the guise of “democracy” and “multilateralism,” China demonstrated its commitment through tangible partnerships and dialogues.
In a move to mend relations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan in Malta from September 16 to 17. The talks reiterated the importance of adhering to the one-China principle, highlighting China’s approach to steering U.S.-China relations towards a constructive path.
China’s active diplomacy in September not only reinforced its alliances with key nations but also sent a strong message about the viability and importance of a multipolar world. As global dynamics continue to evolve, China’s role remains integral in shaping a balanced and inclusive international landscape.
