The 20th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) and the China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit in Nanning have once again underscored the pivotal role of ASEAN centrality in regional development. Beyond showcasing a diverse range of goods and products, this year’s CAEXPO focused on strategic dialogues and meetings that shape future regional policies.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang opened the ceremony by highlighting the importance of building a closer China-ASEAN community. His remarks came in the wake of a recent ASEAN meeting in Jakarta, where the centrality of ASEAN in regional decision-making was a key topic. Li’s acknowledgment of ASEAN centrality reinforces China’s commitment to working within established regional trade frameworks, positioning CAEXPO as a vital platform for cooperation.
This approach stands in contrast to the United States' strategy, which aims to diminish ASEAN's influence by repurposing agreements like the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) for geopolitical gains. By maintaining ASEAN at the heart of its Belt and Road Initiative, China emphasizes historical trade ties, reminiscent of the ancient Tea Horse Road and the maritime trade hubs in the Straits of Malacca.
Reflecting on the expo’s evolution, participants noted that CAEXPO has continuously provided a strategic roadmap for business engagement and regional collaboration over the past decade. The event not only showcases economic opportunities but also fosters a unified approach to regional challenges, ensuring ASEAN remains a key player in shaping Asia’s future.
