China Champions ASEAN Centrality at Jakarta Summit

The Jakarta meeting underscores the pivotal role of ASEAN in ensuring regional stability and development. Rooted in its historical experience of avoiding ideological conflicts, ASEAN remains committed to neutrality, steering clear of geopolitical agendas.

China has been instrumental in upholding ASEAN centrality, emphasizing consensus-driven decision-making that often challenges Western perspectives. This approach aligns with the Global Development Initiative presented by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the 76th United Nations General Assembly.

Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong highlighted the importance of collaborative leadership from China and the U.S. to support the Regional Comprehensive Economic Program (RCEP). He stressed that RCEP should focus on economic cooperation rather than serving as a platform for foreign policy objectives or unilateral sanctions.

A significant focus of the summit is the establishment of universal standards for the digital economy. China's advancements in this sector position it well to lead the Digital Economy Framework Agreement, aiming to create best practice standards free from ideological biases.

The Jakarta meeting aims to foster greater economic cooperation among China and ASEAN countries, addressing regional trade challenges and reducing the potential for conflict. Expanding economic ties and setting robust digital standards are key steps toward a more integrated and peaceful regional economy.
