2025’s Extreme Weather Surge Spurs Calls to Action at COP30

As 2025 draws to a close, a stark message has emerged: extreme weather is accelerating across the globe. From unprecedented storms in Brazil to severe flooding in parts of Asia, prolonged droughts across Africa, and intensified hurricanes in the Caribbean, communities worldwide have been hit with mounting climate losses.

This year’s weather-driven disasters have strained emergency responses and underscored the scale of climate losses. Recovery costs and insured losses soared to unprecedented levels, challenging economies and communities alike.

Against this backdrop, negotiators, activists and community leaders gathered at COP30 in Belém, the Brazilian city at the heart of the Amazon region, to demand concrete action. Delegates pressed for accelerated emissions reductions, increased funding for adaptation, and support for countries on the front lines of climate impacts.

Looking ahead to 2026, the global community faces a clear choice: maintain the status quo and risk deeper losses, or unite around bold policies that can steer the planet toward a more resilient future.
