Kenya is grappling with an intensifying drought, with 20 out of 23 counties in the arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) now facing severe water shortages. According to the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), the deteriorating situation has put millions at risk of starvation.
The NDMA, responsible for drought mitigation, attributes the worsening conditions to the underperformance of the 2024 short rainy season. Despite being classified in the 'normal' drought phase, these counties are trending on a worsening path, as detailed in the January 2025 drought report.
