Severe Earthquake Hits Vanuatu, Leaving 14 Dead and Disrupting Supplies

The South Pacific nation of Vanuatu is reeling from a powerful magnitude-7.3 earthquake that struck its capital, Port Vila, on Tuesday. The devastating quake has resulted in at least 14 fatalities and hundreds of injuries, causing widespread disruption across the island nation.

In the immediate aftermath, all supermarkets in Vanuatu have been forced to close, with only a few Chinese-owned stores remaining open to provide essential supplies such as water and biscuits. While water supply is gradually being restored, electricity has only been regained in the city center, leaving many areas still without power.

The local government is tirelessly working to rescue individuals trapped beneath debris, coordinating relief efforts to support the affected communities. Among the casualties are two Chinese nationals, as confirmed by Chinese Ambassador to Vanuatu Li Minggang.

As Vanuatu faces this crisis, international aid and support are anticipated to play a crucial role in the recovery and rebuilding process, highlighting the importance of global solidarity in times of natural disasters.
