Torrential rains have unleashed a deadly combination of landslides and flash floods on Indonesia's Java island, causing widespread devastation and loss of life. Rescue teams have recovered 10 bodies swept away by the unforgiving waters and buried under immense mud and rocks, with two individuals still missing amidst the chaos.
Since last week, relentless downpours have caused rivers in the Sukabumi district of West Java to overflow, leading to severe erosion and the destruction of more than 170 villages. Lt. Col. Yudi Hariyanto, heading the rescue operations, reported that mud, rocks, and fallen trees have ravaged mountain-side hamlets, leaving a path of devastation in their wake.
The combined force of landslides, flash floods, and strong winds has devastated a total of 172 villages, forcing over 3,000 residents to seek refuge in temporary government shelters. The situation remains dire as authorities have issued evacuation warnings for nearly 1,000 people, with more than 400 homes at imminent risk due to the extreme weather conditions.
