Australia is taking a bold step in the fight against deadly mosquito-borne diseases with the launch of Oxitec Australia.
On Tuesday, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) teamed up with UK biotechnology company Oxitec to introduce genetically engineered male mosquitoes. These modified mosquitoes carry a gene that reduces the population of female mosquitoes, which are responsible for spreading viruses.
The initiative targets two of the most dangerous mosquito species in the Pacific: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. By controlling these populations, Oxitec Australia aims to prevent the spread of diseases such as dengue fever, Zika virus, and yellow fever, significantly improving public health outcomes in the region.
This innovative approach showcases the potential of biotechnology in combating public health challenges and highlights Australia's commitment to leveraging science for global well-being.
