UN’s Top Court Tackles Climate Obligations in Landmark Case

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is set to make history as it opens the largest case in its history on Monday. For two weeks, the ICJ will hear arguments on what countries around the world are legally required to do to combat climate change and support vulnerable nations facing its devastating effects.

Driven by persistent lobbying from island nations fearing their very existence under rising sea levels, the UN General Assembly requested the ICJ last year to provide an opinion on \\"the obligations of states in respect of climate change.\\"

In the decade leading up to 2023, global sea levels have risen by an average of approximately 4.3 centimeters, with certain areas in the Pacific experiencing even higher increases. Additionally, the planet has warmed by 1.3 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels.

This landmark case marks a pivotal moment in international efforts to address climate change, highlighting the urgent need for collective action to mitigate its impact and safeguard the future of vulnerable communities worldwide.
