Erik Solheim, the former Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), emphasized the crucial role that youth play in achieving sustainability worldwide. Speaking at a biodiversity and sustainability forum in Hangzhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province, Solheim highlighted the need for accelerated action towards environmental goals.
Solheim expressed disappointment over the insufficient progress made during the recent UN biodiversity conference, COP16, which concluded in Colombia. He called on nations to intensify their efforts in protecting nature and addressing climate change.
Looking ahead, the UN climate change conference, COP29, is scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan next week, where Solheim anticipates further discussions on enhancing global sustainability initiatives.
In his remarks to CGTN, Solheim urged developed countries to provide increased support to the world's least developed nations, enabling them to better adapt to the challenges posed by climate change.
