Britain's climate advisers, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC), have called on the government to adopt a more ambitious target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 81 percent by 2035 in its upcoming budget.
This recommendation surpasses the existing target of a 78 percent reduction by 2035 compared to 1990 levels and intentionally excludes emissions from international aviation and shipping.
According to the CCC, achieving an 81 percent cut would significantly contribute to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Piers Forster, interim chair of the committee, emphasized that \"With climate damages already felt around the world, targeting an 81 percent emissions reduction by 2035 sets the right level of ambition.\"
Forster added that their analysis indicates this target is attainable in a manner that supports job growth and economic stability, provided the country's 2030 emissions reduction target is met.
The new Labour government is expected to unveil its first budget in 14 years next week, which will likely include increases in public spending and taxes. The government is required to present an updated climate plan and 2035 targets by the UN deadline in February 2025.
Earlier in July, the CCC warned that Britain might not achieve its 2030 emissions reduction target and is currently off track to reach net zero emissions by mid-century.
The latest recommendations will be integrated into the committee's seventh carbon budget plan, covering 2038-2042, projected for publication in February next year.
