Hainan’s Underwater Rainforest: A Success Story of Conservation

Located in China's southernmost island province of Hainan, Lingshui Li Autonomous County is renowned for its pleasant climate and diverse marine resources. Over the past few decades, dedicated conservation efforts have transformed this region into a thriving ecosystem.

One of the most inspiring outcomes of these efforts is the resurgence of the Hainan Eld's deer. Once critically endangered with only 26 individuals remaining in the wild, the population has seen a significant increase, highlighting the positive impact of sustained wildlife protection initiatives.

The underwater environment of Lingshui faced its own set of challenges. Prior to effective development and management strategies, coral reefs were severely damaged due to illegal exploitation. Recognizing the urgent need for restoration, local authorities began growing and transplanting corals in 2004, marking the start of a major rehabilitation project.

These restoration efforts have yielded impressive results. The improved underwater ecosystem has attracted a diverse array of marine creatures, revitalizing the area’s biodiversity. Today, down to 200 meters below the surface, a vibrant \"rainforest\" thrives, supported by marine organisms that harness sunlight for photosynthesis. This underwater haven stands as a testament to successful conservation and serves as a beacon of hope for marine biodiversity worldwide.
