A staggering 76% decline in Africa's iconic wildlife population has been reported by the World Wide Fund for Nature Kenya (WWF-Kenya) in their 2024 Living Planet Report, released in Nairobi.
The report highlights that from 1970 to 2020, species across mammals, reptiles, fish, amphibians, and birds have faced severe population drops. The primary culprits behind this alarming trend include habitat loss and degradation, overexploitation, climate change, pollution, invasive species, and diseases.
\"This alarming trend highlights the urgent need for transformative action to safeguard Africa's natural ecosystems and the livelihoods that depend on them,\" the report emphasizes.
Conservationists are calling for immediate and coordinated efforts to address these challenges, ensuring that future generations can witness the rich biodiversity that Africa has to offer.
