Nigeria is successfully managing the water levels of the River Niger, one of the country's two major rivers, to avert potential flooding. Local authorities announced on Tuesday that proactive measures have kept flood risks at bay in Africa's most populous nation.
Umar Mohammed, head of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), stated that water levels in the River Niger Basin have been gradually receding since early this month. He highlighted that the Jebba Dam is currently spilling excess water in coordination with operators of the Kainji Dam.
\"The Kainji Dam has maintained a 53-centimeter buffer to manage any changes in water inflow,\" Mohammed explained. He emphasized that these actions are part of comprehensive flood preparedness protocols.
Despite the rainy season gradually shifting southward, Mohammed noted that water continues to enter Nigeria, a situation closely monitored by NIHSA. The hydrological agency is committed to collaborating with national and international dam authorities to mitigate river flooding and support Nigeria's socio-economic growth.
