The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), comprising 15 nations, is stepping up its efforts to combat plastic pollution by considering the adoption of a comprehensive regional action plan. This initiative was highlighted by Bernard Yao Koffi, ECOWAS Director for Environment and Natural Resources, during an interview on Monday.
Koffi shared his insights at a two-day workshop supported by the World Bank Group, which focused on strategies to help the subregion effectively tackle plastic waste. \"Many of our member states have introduced national action plans to address plastic pollution, with some even aiming to ban single-use plastics,\" Koffi remarked. However, he acknowledged that these individual efforts have encountered significant implementation challenges.
By developing a regional strategy, ECOWAS aims to streamline efforts across member countries, ensuring more cohesive and effective measures against the growing threat of plastic pollution in West Africa. This collaborative approach seeks to overcome the obstacles faced by national initiatives, fostering a united front in the fight for a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
