Myanmar is grappling with devastating floods as heavy rains triggered by Typhoon Yagi have claimed 74 lives and left 89 people missing. The state media reported these numbers late on Friday, highlighting the widespread impact across the country.
The severe weather has affected 462 villages and wards across 64 townships in regions including Nay Pyi Taw, Bago, Mandalay, Ayeyawady, as well as in Mon, Kayin, and Shan states. The rapid onset of the floods has inundated cities and destroyed critical infrastructure.
Search and rescue operations continue amidst challenging conditions, with damaged infrastructure and downed communication lines hampering efforts. Moreover, the floods have led to the destruction of five dams, four pagodas, and over 65,000 houses, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
Typhoon Yagi, the strongest storm to strike Asia this year, has already resulted in hundreds of fatalities in neighboring Vietnam and Thailand. The swollen rivers and relentless rains have contributed to the widespread devastation in the region.
As Myanmar remains war-torn, the natural disaster compounds the struggles faced by its citizens, calling for urgent international aid and support to manage the unfolding crisis.
