UN Names Retno Marsudi Special Envoy to Advance Global Water Security

The United Nations has taken a significant step towards ensuring a water-secure future worldwide by appointing Retno L.P. Marsudi of Indonesia as the Special Envoy on Water. Announced on Friday, this appointment aims to galvanize partnerships and concerted efforts to advance the global water agenda, building on the outcomes of the UN 2023 Water Conference.

Retno Marsudi, who will assume her role on November 1, brings a wealth of experience from her tenure as Indonesia's Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2014 to October 2024. In her new capacity, she will advocate for stronger political, economic, and sociocultural cooperation at all levels to support Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

\"The special envoy will draw on these outcomes in the lead-up to various global water processes, particularly the UN 2026 Water Conference,\" the UN press release stated. Marsudi's role will involve enhancing international cooperation and creating synergies among various water-related initiatives to achieve all water-related goals and targets.

Representing the UN chief in global water processes, Marsudi will collaborate closely with UN-Water and its member organizations to support the implementation of the UN System-wide Strategy on Water and Sanitation. Her efforts are expected to align with the SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework, ensuring a coordinated approach to tackling water security challenges.
