In a heartening development for marine conservation, the population of Yangtze finless porpoises has risen to 65 in the Nanjing Yangtze Finless Porpoise Provincial Nature Reserve. This increase was observed during a survey conducted from autumn 2023 to summer 2024 by the Nanjing Municipal Forestry and Parks Bureau in east China's Jiangsu Province.
Compared to the approximately 62 porpoises recorded in the 2022 survey, this growth signifies a positive trend for the species, which is considered endangered. Notably, researchers documented nine instances of mother and baby dolphins, underscoring the resilience and reproductive success within the reserve.
The Nanjing Yangtze Finless Porpoise Provincial Nature Reserve plays a crucial role in safeguarding the habitat and fostering the recovery of these unique marine mammals.
