Sudan Floods Claim 173 Lives, Affect Over 170,000 Across 11 States

Heavy rains and devastating floods have ravaged Sudan since the beginning of the rainy season in June, leading to the tragic loss of 173 lives and injuring 505 individuals, according to the Sudanese Health Ministry.

Eleven of Sudan's eighteen states have been severely impacted, with floods destroying 18,665 homes and damaging an additional 14,947. The Ministry's report, released on August 31, highlighted that over 170,000 Sudanese citizens have been affected by the catastrophe.

In Kassala State, flooding from the Gash River has caused extensive damage to agricultural land and residential areas, exacerbating the region's challenges. The situation worsened on August 25, when the Arbaat Dam near Port Sudan collapsed, resulting in at least 60 deaths and further damaging critical infrastructure.
