China has launched a pivotal open laboratory aimed at advancing the energy sector by integrating meteorological research into energy exploration and development.
The collaboration brings together the China Meteorological Administration's Public Meteorological Service Center, China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd., and the Institute of Atmospheric Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Shu Yinbiao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chairman of the lab's academic committee, highlighted that this initiative marks a significant step towards developing a modern electric power system in China by leveraging the critical link between weather conditions and the energy sector, as reported by China Science Daily.
Lab director Shen Yanbo emphasized the essential role of meteorology in renewable energy industries, such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric power, which are highly influenced by weather and climate patterns.
The lab's research will focus on innovative energy systems and technologies, including wind and solar energy forecasting, meteorological disaster warnings, artificial intelligence applications, offshore wind power, and the smart operation and maintenance of the renewable energy sector.
