Japan is bracing for the landfall of Typhoon Shanshan, resulting in injuries and widespread disruptions across multiple prefectures. As reported by Kyodo News on Wednesday, nine individuals were injured in Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures.
Located 90 kilometers south-southwest of Yakushima Island in Kagoshima prefecture, Shanshan, the 10th typhoon of the year, is slowly moving northward. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued emergency warnings for storms and high waves in Kagoshima, urging residents to remain vigilant.
In response to the impending storm, evacuation orders have been issued for over 800,000 residents across Kagoshima prefecture in Kyushu, as well as the central Aichi and Shizuoka prefectures. These measures aim to ensure the safety of the population as the typhoon approaches.
Economic activities are also being impacted. Toyota, the renowned Japanese auto giant, announced the suspension of operations at all 14 of its plants in Japan from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning. Additionally, airlines and rail operators have canceled some services in the coming days to mitigate the effects of the typhoon.
Typhoon Shanshan has been categorized as "very strong," with sustained winds of 50 meters per second and gusts reaching up to 70 meters per second (252 km/h/157 mph). The combination of these powerful winds and heavy rainfall poses significant challenges for infrastructure and daily life in the affected regions.
