Researchers from the Chinese mainland are sounding the alarm as some low-elevation glaciers on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau face permanent disappearance. This alarming trend could have profound effects on the plateau’s delicate ecosystem.
Wu Guangjian, a researcher at the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), highlighted the Rongbuk Glacier at the foot of Mount Qomolangma as a case in point: \\"The length and height of it are both shrinking.\\"
The effects of global warming have created a situation where glacier evaporation is outpacing precipitation. As a result, small glaciers at lower altitudes on the plateau are melting faster than ever and may vanish in the foreseeable future, threatening the stability of the region’s ecosystem.
