Norway and Netherlands Gear Up for New Mpox Variant Amid European Alert

Norway and the Netherlands are ramping up their defenses against a new variant of mpox, following Sweden's recent confirmation of Clade I, a more infectious strain, last Thursday.

Norway's Ministry of Health affirmed on Monday that the country's robust healthcare system is well-prepared to handle potential mpox outbreaks. \"The risk of mpox infection in the Norwegian population is low, according to the Institute of Public Health,\" stated Health Minister Jan Christian Vestre. He added, \"Our country is equipped with robust health preparedness, a well-prepared healthcare system, and ample access to vaccines to handle mpox infections effectively.\"

Collaborative efforts are ongoing with the World Health Organization, the European Union, and regional health organizations to monitor and respond to any developments swiftly.

In the Netherlands, the public health authority RIVM announced heightened vigilance among healthcare providers for the potential spread of the new mpox variant. \"If a case is detected, the Municipal Health Service will conduct source and contact tracing and provide guidance to prevent further transmission,\" RIVM stated. Chantal Reusken, a virologist at RIVM, commented, \"It is likely only a matter of time before a new variant of mpox appears in the Netherlands. But the risk is low and the disease is manageable due to our robust healthcare system.\"

Vaccines are readily available for close contacts, and the Netherlands maintains a sufficient stock to address any emerging cases effectively.
