South Korea is currently grappling with an extraordinary heat wave, as cities like Seoul and Busan experience a record-breaking number of tropical nights. A tropical night is defined by overnight temperatures that stay at or above 25°C from 6:01 p.m. to 9 a.m. the next day.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), Seoul has endured an unprecedented 28 consecutive tropical nights since July 21. This surpasses the previous record of 26 nights set in 2018, marking the longest streak since meteorological observations began in 1907.
Busan is also facing its own heat record, having withstood 24 consecutive tropical nights since July 25. This surpasses the previous record of 21 nights, which was last reached in both 1994 and 2018.
The prolonged heat wave has significant implications for public health, energy consumption, and the environment. Authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions and stay hydrated as temperatures continue to soar.
