Perched at a breathtaking 4,100 meters above sea level, Jianzuo Village in the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of northwest China's Qinghai Province has become a beacon of sustainability. Once plagued by plastic waste, the community embarked on a transformative journey to embrace a zero-waste lifestyle.
In 2017, under the leadership of Jamyang Sherab and with the support of the Snowland Great Rivers Environmental Protection Association, Jianzuo Village established a zero-waste community center. Built from repurposed materials, the center symbolizes the villagers' commitment to sustainability and has become the heart of their eco-conscious lifestyle.
The villagers adopted practical measures such as using cloth bags and stainless steel containers, decisively rejecting disposable plastics. These efforts not only cleaned up their immediate environment but also set an inspiring example for neighboring communities. Today, 54 families and two temples in Jianzuo, along with an additional 220 families in Nangqen County, Yushu Prefecture, have embraced the zero-waste ethos.
Their pioneering efforts highlight the power of community action in addressing environmental challenges. Jianzuo Village serves as a blueprint for sustainable living, proving that even in the most remote regions, dedicated communities can make a significant impact on preserving our planet.
