Qinghai-Xizang Plateau: A Major Player in Carbon Capture

A recent study highlights the pivotal role of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau in combating climate change. The plateau's ecosystem absorbs an impressive 120 to 140 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually, accounting for 10 to 16 percent of the Chinese mainland's total ecosystem carbon sink.

Despite emitting 55 million tonnes of CO2 each year, the plateau maintains a carbon surplus exceeding 65 million tonnes. This significant balance underscores the region's vital contribution to global carbon reduction efforts.

Yao Tandong, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the leader of the scientific research survey, shared these findings at a press conference in Lhasa. He emphasized the importance of preserving and expanding such natural carbon sinks to achieve broader environmental sustainability goals.

The Qinghai-Xizang Plateau's ability to sequester large amounts of carbon dioxide not only aids in mitigating climate change but also supports biodiversity and ecosystem health. As the world seeks effective strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the plateau stands out as a crucial natural ally.
