Thousands of residents in northeastern Athens and the broader Attica region stayed up late into Monday night for the second consecutive evening as a large, rapidly spreading wildfire threatened the nation's capital.
Driven by strong winds and dry conditions, the fire has expanded swiftly and continues to rage across multiple fronts despite a substantial firefighting effort. Over 700 firefighters, military personnel, volunteers, 35 water-dropping aircraft, and helicopters have been deployed to contain the blaze, according to a Fire Brigade spokesperson.
Fortunately, the situation began to improve in several other areas by Monday night, offering some relief to the affected communities.
